Rumours have circulated for a few years now that Perth’s Highs And Lows had been working on a New Balance collaboration. There was speculation over what model was being used, release dates, whether it was a single shoe or a pack, and even conjecture over where the shoes were being made (UK or Asian). Finally all the heresay and gossip can be laid to rest as HAL reveal the Day/Night pack, consisting of two contrasting yet complementary Asian made 577s.

First off a big congrats to the HAL guys for being only the second Australian store to work with New Balance (after the now-gone Provider). These two New Balance shoes continue the five year birthday celebrations for Perth’s top sneaker store.

Having had the pleasure of seeing these shoes during the sampling stage I can pass a few opinions on for each of them. First the “Day”…

Great mix of materials with mesh and suede being a New Balance staple. The colours used on the shoe actually really work, especially on foot. Completely appropriate for an Aussie summer. The shape of the Asian 577 seems to be greatly improved on these shoes, add to that the great quality that comes out of NB’s “cheaper” factories that puts other companies to shame and you have a great shoe to wear when the weather dictates shorts.

Next up we have the darker cousin in the form of the “Night” colourway.

Taking inspiration of the lunar kind (not to be confused with a certain Nike tagline), the “Night” 577 goes low-key but lets the details do the talking. Nice leathers, perforated toebox and some key reflective hits means if you’re a bit wary on an afternoon storm you can grab these any not look like a retard if the rain doesn’t eventuate. If it does you’re safe as well.

Much like the Reebok GL 6000 they recently did, it’s the details on these shoes that show the HAL guys know their sneakers. Multiple laces, keyrings and printed insoles are something that unless you spend your days looks down at peoples feet would probably get left out of the package. They understand what makes buying sneakers fun. What’s better is they went as far to think about the price of the set, deciding that Asian made although of lesser over quality compared to their continental cousin (although that could be debated) the ability to pick up both shoes for nearly the retail price of a single pair of UK made 577s was much needed.

You can read the story behind the pack on Sneaker Freaker. Otherwise, these will be hitting the shelves at Laced early 2011.
